Some human studies
NAD+
Coenzyme (not a peptide) · Longevity · Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide; precursors NMN and NR
What it is
A molecule every cell uses to make energy and repair DNA. Levels fall with age, which has made raising them a popular longevity idea.
What research covers
Small human trials of NAD+ building blocks (NMN, NR) show they raise NAD+ levels and are well tolerated. Clear benefits for health or ageing in people have not yet been shown.
Reported side effects
- Flushing, nausea or stomach upset
- With infusions: chest tightness or cramping if given too fast
Not suitable for, or talk to a doctor first
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Cancer, without telling your oncologist
Good to know
- NAD+ is not a peptide, but it is often sold and discussed alongside them.
Legal status
| Australia | NMN and NR are sold as supplements in some forms. NAD+ injections and infusions are a medical treatment. Check current TGA rules. |
|---|---|
| United States | NR is sold as a supplement. The FDA has questioned NMN's supplement status. |
| Sport | Not prohibited by WADA at the time of writing. |
Rules change. Check with the TGA (Australia), your local regulator, or WADA for sport.
