Storing peptides: fridge, handling and travel
2 min read
In short: Keep mixed vials in the fridge at 2–8 °C, in the dark, upright, and away from the door and back wall. Never freeze them unless the product says you can. Write the mixing date on the vial and follow the product's use-by period, which isn't always 28 days.
The essentials
| What to do | |
|---|---|
| Temperature | Fridge, 2–8 °C, unless your product says otherwise |
| Light | In a closed, dark container or the original box |
| Position | Upright, so the stopper stays dry |
| Dates | Write the mixing date and the use-by date on the label |
| Freezing | Don't, unless the product information says it's fine |
| Unmixed powder | Follow the label. Often fridge or cool and dry. |
Where in the fridge?
| Spot | |
|---|---|
| Door | Avoid: the temperature swings every time it opens |
| Against the back wall | Avoid: some fridges freeze things here |
| Crisper drawer | Can be warmer or damp. Check with a thermometer. |
| Middle shelf | Usually the most stable spot |
A cheap fridge thermometer tells you what your fridge is really doing.
Everyday handling
Do:
- Swirl gently if you need to mix; don't shake
- Wipe the stopper before each draw
- Put the vial back in the fridge straight away
- Check the label, appearance and date every time
What to look for before each use
| Check | Normal | Set it aside if |
|---|---|---|
| Appearance | As described for the product, usually clear | Cloudy or hazy when it shouldn't be |
| Particles | None | Flecks, strands or sediment |
| Colour | Same as when mixed | Changed |
| Stopper | Intact and seated | Cracked, lifted or damaged |
| Date | Within its use-by | Past it, or unknown |
Looking fine doesn't prove a vial is sterile or still works. If its history is uncertain, don't rely on appearance.
When things go wrong
| What happened | What to do |
|---|---|
| Left out briefly | Put it back in the fridge and note roughly how long it was out |
| Left out overnight or somewhere warm | Treat it as uncertain. Check the product guidance or ask your pharmacist. |
| Power cut | Keep the fridge shut. Check the temperature when power returns. |
| Frozen or slushy | Don't assume thawing fixes it. Check the guidance before using. |
| Looks wrong or seal damaged | Don't use it |
Travelling
- Pack vials upright in a rigid case, inside an insulated bag with a cold pack.
- Put a barrier between the cold pack and the vials so they can't freeze.
- Keep the bag with you, out of the sun, and never in a parked car.
- Flying: carry medicines in hand luggage with your prescription or a doctor's letter, and check the airline's rules on cold packs.
- Find a fridge as soon as you arrive. The original use-by date still applies.
Weekly checklist
- Fridge thermometer reading in range
- Labels and use-by dates checked
- Vials upright, container closed and dry
- Anything unusual noted
